Geoff Canada on “Equity is the Superior Growth Model”
This post is part of a series presenting equity leaders’ reactions to “America’s Tomorrow: Equity is the Superior Growth Model” — a new paper that challenges the nation to invest in our collective future. This post is written by Geoff Canada, President and CEO of Harlem Children’s Zone. Click here to read other reflections..
The Harlem Children’s Zone is getting hundreds – and soon, thousands – of poor children of color into college. However, from my perspective, it will be a failure if our strategy of supporting children from birth through college is not applied in other devastated communities across America.
Education is the surest way out of poverty, so it is incumbent on all of us to make sure the opportunity to get a great education is truly available to all American children. America’s Tomorrow outlines several smart, do-able strategies where education can improve the outlook for poor children as well as the country’s workforce.
If we improve the odds for the 15 million American children living in poverty, we will be unleashing an incredible resource; we will enable these children to add their incredible energy, strength and intelligence to the nation’s economic engine.
