PolicyLink Founder & CEO Angela Glover Blackwell Joins President Obama and Others to Discuss Equity and Infrastructure

The White HouseToday, PolicyLink Founder and CEO Angela Glover Blackwell joined mayors, governors, and current and former transportation secretaries as President Obama called for infrastructure investments to put people back to work, revitalize communities, and strengthen America’s global competitiveness.

President Obama also released an economic analysis that makes a powerful case for transforming investment in our nation’s infrastructure. Prepared by the Department of the Treasury and the Council of Economic Advisers, An Economic Analysis of Infrastructure Investment illustrates why now is the time to rebuild our aging infrastructure to power a 21st century economy.

“We cannot rebuild our economy without first rebuilding our communities,” said Angela Glover Blackwell, who joined the meeting on behalf of PolicyLink and Transportation for America. “We applaud President Obama‘s call for infrastructure investments that will put people back to work today and pave the way to a more inclusive economy tomorrow. As a nation, we must focus on strategic investments that generate maximum economic impact, and point these investments directly to communities hit first and worst by this economic crisis, such as lower-income people and communities of color.”

The research clearly shows that not all infrastructure investments generate the same economic impact. Research from the University of Massachusetts, for example, found public transportation generates 31 percent more jobs than new construction of roads and bridges.

Historically, low-income people and communities of color have been left behind by the lack of access to quality transportation options. Low-income households, including those in rural areas, spend about 42 percent of their total annual income on transportation. These inequities are a threat to the American dream, and require urgent attention.

Ms. Blackwell said: “We must urge Congress to invest in infrastructure and all of the workers necessary to begin restoring and rebuilding the foundation of tomorrow’s America today.”
